Happy Veterans Day 2020!
A time to honor those who have sacrificed so much for our continued freedom.
Happy Veterans Day to all those who have served both past and present! Veterans Day is an important holiday in the U.S. and around the world. Although not everyone celebrates this day, its significance dates back to World War I.
Originally called Armistice Day, Congress declared it a national holiday to commemorate the end of the Great War (WWI). The cease fire, or armistice, went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The official end of the war wasn’t until the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in June of 1919, but most celebrate the end of hostilities that took place on 11/11. November 11th remained Armistice Day until President Dwight D. Eisenhower declared it “Veterans” Day to include those who have fought in not only WWII, but all wars. You can read more about the history of Veterans Day on the VA website here.
Today is the day when you can celebrate the service of so many brave individuals. You may find a Veteran sitting next to you at work, living next door, teaching in your child’s school or repairing the roof on your house. Veterans are all around us – in fact, there are more than 18.2 million living Veterans in the U.S.! Take some time today or sometime this month to recognize their sacrifice.
Honoring our Veterans can come in many forms. Here are a few ideas that you can do today to show your appreciation for serving our country and protecting our freedom around the world:
- Write a letter to someone in the military who is currently deployed
- Attend a Veterans Day event or parade to show support
- Call a Veteran family member
- Thank a Veteran for their service
- Donate time, money or supplies to a local Veterans organization or charity
- Read something a Veteran wrote about their experiences
- Take flowers to a Veterans memorial
- Hang a flag in your yard
- Teach a younger person (child, friend, or neighbor) what it means to be a Veteran
- Take a Veteran out to lunch or dinner
As a Veteran Owned Small Business, we understand the sacrifice that current and former service members have made for our country and way of life. Thank you for your service!
